Ariane Koch & Sarina Scheidegger

Since 2012, Ariane Koch & Sarina Scheidegger have been working together in the field of performance. They collaboratively write scripts and scores that are then interpreted by performers. The performances are shown in various places and often transfered into the urban public space through posters. They refuse to document their work through pictures, as their main interest lies in the ephemeral moment of the performance. The stories of and about the performances, told by the audience, which is also the unique witness, is an essential component in their artistic practice. The oral narrative, the performative reproduction of the work, as well as the expandend authorship are a central part of the life and mediation of their performances.
Ariane Koch & Sarina Scheidegger presented their perfomances at Lokal. Int in Biel, at Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Vienna, at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin) and the IPA Performancefestival (Istanbul). Recently they were included in the show “New Swiss Performance Now”, Kunsthalle Basel, and in “Magic Circle”, Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Vienna (A) and will be featured in “Theater Is A Must”, curated by Adel Abdel Wahab in Alexandria (EGY).

SAA: Would you tell us something about the artwork you will present at the Swiss Art Awards 2018?

AK&SS: It will involve seven performers and a lot of handkerchiefs. Yes, handkerchiefs, the ones made out of cotton, pretty old-fashioned, we know. Shall we tell them about the traditional dance in South America? Or about the few people we know still using the handkerchiefs? Shall we tell them that the performers can escape?
Und wenn die Gruppe durch die Halle zieht, so ist es ein stiller Protest.

SAA: If you could work with a specialist, from which field would that be and on what kind of project?

AK&SS: Ariane, what about a marine biologist? I always wanted to go on a sea trip and make a performance related to the knowledge of the ocean.
Shall we write them that you are actually the salmon and I am the blue whale? Or we go on with: Bankräuber_in, Ritter_in, Schwimmer_in.

SAA: In the future, looking back: What will art history write about you?

AK&SS: They were so stubborn not to document their performances that  – so sorry! – no images available.
