Maëlle Gross

Maëlle Gross’s video work is a feminist speculation based on an associative concatenation of quotations. An erudite narrator guides us from the topic of the mother to the mushroom at the end of the world, and to a fluid goddess Diana whose voguing can be read as a combat manoeuvre, with fingernails as weapons and looks that can kill. Like science fiction, dreaming is a tactic used here to make narratives modellable, in the sense of both nocturnal dreaming as poetic engine, and dreaming of another world. The jury were impressed by Maëlle Gross’s meticulous, original staging, her concern with topical issues, and the way in which the text fragments productively contaminate each other.
